Wembley, Munich´s Fussball Arena, Lansdowne Road and Bucharest´s National Stadium chosen for 2011 and 2012 finals

London, Munich, Dublin and Bucharest have won the right to host Uefa club competition finals in 2011 and 2012.

The Champions League final will be held at London’s Wembley stadium in 2011, and at Munich’s Fussball Arena in 2012.

The final of the Europa League – formerly the Uefa Cup – will be held at Dublin’s Lansdowne Road in 2011 and Bucharest’s National Stadium in 2012.

The venues were approved at a meeting of the Uefa executive committee in Nyon, Switzerland yesterday.

Wembley beat Munich’s Allianz Arena and Berlin’s Olympiastadion to the hosting rights, in a decision that had been expected, reports the AFP news agency. AFP says Uefa had delayed a decision on the 2011 venue to give the UK government time to push through an exemption on tax rules for players appearing in the final.

Wembley’s success meant that London-based English Premier League club Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium lost out on hosting the 2011 Europa League final to Lansdowne Road. Chairman of the FA, Lord Triesman, said, "As Wembley has been chosen to host the Champions League final this means the Emirates Stadium can't stage the 2011 UEFA Europa League final. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Arsenal for all their valuable support during the bid process and recognise the very strong bid that they put together."

Belarus and Cyprus, welcome to the Group Stage

Clubs from 22 countries played in the Champions League in the competition’s first four seasons from 1992/1993. Only seven new countries had provided clubs to the competition since the 1996/1997 season but two more, Belarus and Cyprus, have qualified in 2008/2009, according to Infostrada.

These performances could be very important in the future. In spite of the Groups are not easy, they could earn some points for the UEFA rankings. Both teams have play three qualifying rounds, like these other teams in the history.

Qualification round: best historical performances

Champions League qualification begins on Tuesday with 28 clubs entering at this stage.

The first qualification round was included in 2002. Dynamo Kyiv arrived to semifinals in 1998/1999 season, leads by Andriy Shevchenko.

Since the current system of qualification was introduced in 1999/2000, only two clubs entering at the first qualification round have extended their run to the group phase.

Liverpool and Artmedia Bratislava both qualified for the 2005/2006 Champions League group phase having entered the competition in the first qualification round.

Liverpool’s task was easier as they were seeded in all three qualification rounds. The Reds beat Welsh club TNS FC 6-0 on aggregate, Lithuanians FBK Kaunas 5-1 and CSKA Sofia from Bulgaria 3-2 over two matches.

Slovakian club Artmedia Bratislava reached the next round after beating Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty 4-3 on aggregate in the first qualification round.

After this Artmedia Bratislava were unseeded but beat Celtic 5-4 on aggregate after a 5-0 win in the home leg and Partizan Belgrade 4-3 on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

Artmedia went on to third place in their group and Liverpool reached the last 16 of the tournament where they were knocked out by Benfica.
